If you're having problems selecting gears, your gearstick is sloppy or rattling then this bush has most likely split! Its not hard to replace but a little tricky. On a beetle it is located in the tunnel just behind the gearstick, To replace it the shift rod needs to be removed by removing the gear stick, undoing the coupling under the back seat, removing the inspection hatch on the framehead and the front valance plates and withdrawing the rod from the car, Replace the bush and slide the rod back through. On a splitscreen bus you can just disconnect the front shift rod and remove gearstick to access the bush. often the rear coupling is worn too, we sell replacements in the Wolfsburg Restos ebay shop should you need it.
